Vinayagar Chathurthi Poosai is a special prayer ritual performed during the festival of Vinayagar Chathurthi, celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha. The poosai involves setting up an altar with a Ganesha idol, offering sweets, fruits, and flowers, chanting prayers, performing aarti, and seeking blessings for prosperity and the removal of obstacles. The ritual concludes with the distribution of prasad, the blessed offerings.
"Maha Mariamman Poosai" refers to the worship (poosai) of Maha Mariamman, a powerful Hindu goddess associated with rain, fertility, and protection. She is particularly revered in South India, especially Tamil Nadu. Mariamman is considered a manifestation of the goddess Parvati and is often depicted with a fierce countenance to ward off evil.
The festival is made up of two words, namely "Raksha" and "Bandhan." As per the Sanskrit terminology, the occasion means "the tie or knot of protection" where "Raksha" stands for the protection and "Bandhan" signifies the verb to tie. Together, the festival symbolizes the eternal love of brother-sister relationship which does not mean just the blood relationships only. It is also celebrated among cousins, sister and sister-in-law.
